The tank had a significant thermal load increasing its ambient temperature from the operation of the nearby Air Management System. Finally, the investigators surmise that a chafed wire within the tank provided enough ignition energy to destroy the tank and the entire aircraft.

This chapter also described the high-lift systems (flaps and slats) that have been used to increase lift during both takeoff and landing. These high-lift systems became a necessity as aircraft and wing designs were optimized for the cruise phase of commercial flight.
