Examination of the Female Pelvis,The pioneering work of Donald et al. (1958) dealt with the possibility of visualizing lower abdominal structures by ultrasound. Today all modern ultrasound instruments can demonstrate normal anatomic structures in the pelvis, a knowledge of which is fundamental to diagnosis.

Pregnancy (First Trimester),In the first trimester ultrasound is not yet generally accepted as a screening procedure, and in many countries used only where specific indications exist. One such indication is to monitor the outcome of therapy in infertile patients (see Chap. 15).

Multiple Pregnancy,The early diagnosis of multiple pregnancy is based on the demonstration of two or more gestational sacs, and can be made as early as 5 weeks gestation. By 1976, Campbell et al. were able to diagnose quintuplets by ultrasound at 8 weeks. The earliest we have been able to detect a multiple pregnancy was at 5 weeks.

Amniocentesis,Amniocentesis for prenatal diagnosis of genetic disease has become a universally practiced technique. Owing to improvements in methodology, it is no longer reserved for high-risk cases.
