For one-electron systems, the spin–orbit interaction leads to modifications to the energies found in chapter ., and some degeneracies are broken. After having introduced the effect for the hydrogen, we generalise it to multielectron atoms.

The Zeeman Effect,e smallest perturbation. This section is divided into atoms that respectively do and do not have hyperfine structure. Thereafter we study magnetic fields strong enough to dominate over either the spin–orbit interaction or the hyperfine structure. We also cover the intermediate case. We end the chapter by looking at higher order effects.
