Ecological Notes on Sago in New Guinea,wales and swampy mountain valleys. It occurs naturally from sea level to approximately 1000 m altitude, but has probably spread widely beyond its natural range through planting. Sago grows on silt, clay and peat of alluvial plains and backswamps as well as on sand in some coastal localities, and on sites that are fresh or slightly brackish.

Logging the Swamp for Food,w species which persist in less tropical latitudes mark the periphery of an extensive realm when the earth throve in a warmer climate. Perhaps more than any other, the heartland of this family of plants has remained intact since the Cretaceous, for it is confined to that part of the world where climatic changes were least extreme, 10°N and S.

Seed Structure and Physiology in Some Equatorial Palms in Relation to Spread and Survival, tropical trees and woody climbers manifest a tremendous diversity of size, structure, time of development and manner of distribution of their fruits or seeds. The Palmae are one such family (Corner 1966).
