Biosynthesis of nitric oxide: Dependence on pteridine metabolism,. Cytokine or drug-mediated increase in intracellular tetrahydrobiopterin, in contrast, stimulates NO formation and hence NO-mediated effects on the cells. Two of these effects have been detailed here, the activation of soluble guanylyl cyclase by binding of NO to its heme group and the regulation of iron metabolism by interaction with IRP.
