History of Retinal Stem Cell Surgery,In 2009, I began my investigation of performing stem cell surgery for untreatable, potentially blinding, retina and optic nerve conditions. Following an extensive literature search, I located a clinic in Dusseldorf, Germany, that was performing retrobulbar injections of BMSC to treat age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Photos,al stem cells represent a few percent of the total amount of material, which includes a myriad of growth factors. That is why I use the term “bone marrow fraction.” The separation removes the red cells but the remaining material is red in color (Fig. 9.1).
