Hence, added to the list of previously identified multiple purposes for water resources development and management is another: the restoration, maintenance and enhancement of our life supporting ecosystems. The importance of preserving nature rather than modifying it is becoming increasingly evident.

Ecological Problems of River Systems Regulated by Reservoirss today very few rivers without a reservoir. The Volga Dnieper, Angara, Columbia, Missouri, Tennessee, Parana and hundreds of other large and small rivers have essentially been transformed to cascades of reservoirs.
