St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo (354–430 CE)is will to be a Christian priest, and later became a bishop. Augustine’s discussion of monstrous races would be influential in early modern debates over the theory of polygenesis (see Paracelsus, Bruno, Whitaker, Boyle, and Hale), which held that all men might not be derived from the same biblical patriarch.
