描述Scanning near-field optical microscopy (.SNOM., also knownas .NSOM.) is a new .local probe technique. with a resolvingpower of 10--50 nm. Not being limited by diffraction, near-fieldoptics (NFO) opens new perspectives for optical characterization andthe understanding of optical phenomena, in particular in biology,microelectronics and materials science..SNOM, after first demonstrations in ‘83/‘84, has undergone a rapiddevelopment in the past two to four years. The increased interest hasbeen largely stimulated by the wealth of optical properties that canbe investigated and the growing importance of characterization on thenanometer scale in general. Examples include the use of fluorescence,birefrigence and plasmon effects for applications in particular inbiology, microelectronics and materials science, to name just afew..This volume emerged from the first international meeting devotedexclusively to NFO, and comprises a complete survey of the 1992activities in the field, in particular the variety of instrumentaltechniques that are currently being explored, the demonstration of theimaging capabilities as well as theoretical interpretations - a highlynontrivial task. Reflection Shear Force/Near-Field Scanning Optical Microscopy (NSOM)hat provides shear force and reflection NSOM images. In addition, with this microscope, we can also obtain Raman scattering information with comparable resolution. Data is provided on nonlinear optical crystals and gold-on-silicon samples.

Theory of Evanescent and Radiative Fieldsversion rate is strongly dependent on the proximity of resonant modes (surface plasmon or phonon polaritons) and it is important to determine the conditions of formation of these modes. A very general and practical scheme, based on the electromagnetic Green function is proposed as a tool to describe this conversion.

Recent Experimental Results with the PSTM: - Observation of a Step on a Quartz Surface. - Spatial Spctroscopy the distribution of the refractive index variation of the sample can be found out. Images of microwaveguides in topographic mode as well as in spectroscopic mode are presented and discussed.
