Optimizing the processor-to-memory bandwidth is one possibility to simultaneously reduce memory and bus power.

In particular, separation between computation and storage was quite rigorous, logic (i.e., computation) chips did not contain a significant amount of memory and vice-versa.

Energy Optimization of the Memory Sub-System,mpletely changed this picture. Nowadays, the cost per memory bit is extremely low, and memory size is rarely the main issue. Memory performance and power consumption are now the key challenges in system design.
