A Theoretically Based Comprehension MeasureAs noted several times in previous chapters, comprehension is not easily defined. In some situations, comprehension means nothing more than being able to recall facts presented in a text. In other circumstances, comprehension requires abstracting a text’s main theme; and in still others, comprehension involves drawing inferences from what is read.

Applications of Tests in Reading Instructionen manage quite well in any type of reading course. There is, of course, a great deal of overlap among teaching methods, so that rarely is a child exposed to a “pure” language or phonics curriculum. Nevertheless, it seems fair to say that for the average child,* reading instruction by any method is equally likely to be successful.
