Rupture and Stress Corrosion Cracking of Martensitic Stainless SteelMartensitic stainless steels are used when high corrosion resistance and high mechanical properties are both required. However, martensitic stainless steels, when aged or when not properly thermally treated can fail under stress corrosion cracking as shown in the following few examples.

Atmospheric Corrosion of Stainless SteelSurprisingly; highly corrosion resistant alloys such as 303, 304 or 309L have experienced cracking in the open atmosphere of the containment building. So far, the root cause of this cracking is not fully understood.

Mechanical Fatigue Failuremes a DE cannot or did not definitively identify the type of fatigue responsible for the failure that was observed in the field. In such a situation, the relevant DE is reported in the mechanical fatigue failure chapter, even if we think that we may be facing thermal fatigue.
