Marine N.-fixing microorganisms include various cyanobacteria, phototrophic Bacteria (proteobacteria), heterotrophic or photoheterotrophic Bacteria (proteobacteria) and some Archaea. Although Archaea are abundant in the oceans and seafloor, probably the least is known about their physiology including potential for N. fixation.
