Various extensions of the notion of IL-ABS are given and briefly discussed as an advocacy in favor of a continuous line between “real” ABS comprising ILs and other liquid-liquid extraction systems including one IL.

ABS Constituted by Ionic Liquids and Carbohydrates,lecules. This technology is of particular relevance for the extraction of highly hydrophobic compounds, such as β-carotene. Nevertheless, the robustness and further acceptance of IL-carbohydrate-based ABS as a separation technology is largely dependent on an efficient recovery of the value-added compounds and further IL recovery and reuse.

ABS Composed of Ionic Liquids and Polymers,he formation of these ABS are further highlighted and discussed based on liquid–liquid and vapour–liquid equilibria behaviour of ternary polymer–IL–water systems. It is shown that the salting-in/salting-out effects in these systems are controlled by a complex interplay of polymer–IL, polymer–water and IL–water interactions.
