Calibration and IntegrationCombining individual subframes into master files is often referred to as stacking. In PI, this process is called integration, and calibration and alignment must be performed prior to integrating the light frames. Unique to PI is an additional process called CosmeticCorrection that follows calibration, and should be used for best results.

Cosmetic CorrectionWith calibration complete, monochromatic light frames could now be aligned. For best results however, an extra step remains. Each image processing program calls it something different: bad pixel map, defect map, etc. PixInsight calls it cosmetic correction, and is able to repair the majority of these defects with a single process.

Delinearization and LRGB CombinationTo this point, PixInsight has afforded us the advantage of repairing images while they were linear. Whether an OSC master or a luminance and chrominance master, disabling the STF’s Auto Stretch is a reminder that our images are a long way from having the brightness and contrast necessary for graphical display on a monitor or in print.
