Characteristics Common to All Inbred Strainsone or more of those characteristics which are common to all inbred strains. The aim of this chapter is to discuss the characteristics common to all inbred strains, and to discuss these in relation to F. and F. hybrids and outbred stocks.

F1 Hybridsins, but also differ in a number of important respects, and are widely used in research. The designation of F. hybrids is covered in Chapter 2. It is worth noting that in describing a hybrid the female parent should always be given first.

Inbred Strains of Miceme of the more widely used strains have become divided into sublines among which there are detectable genetic differences. Some strains are recorded in the literature but are now extinct. Such strains have been excluded from this list.

Possible Future TrendsAccurate prediction of future events is difficult if not impossible. However, in the short term future trends can be estimated from the immediate past. In the case of inbred strains in biomedical research it seems probable that over the next 5–10 years the following are likely to occur, at least to some extent:
