,Variability of the Earth’s climate,were absorbed, the Earth would receive 1.7_1014 kW. Actually, only about 70% of the incident solar energy is absorbed by the Earth; nevertheless, the solar input far exceeds that which derives from the interior. Therefore geothermal energy may be ignored in dealing with the heat balance of the Earth.

Ice core data,t would add another 7 meters. Since the average depth of the oceans is about 3,800 meters, there is considerably more water in the oceans than there is tied up in the ice sheets. However, the ice sheets account for about half the fresh water on the planet.
