Maria A. Mange,Heinz F. W. Maurerent curium, Li.CmO., and, what we believe to be the first representative of pentavalent curium, Na.CmO., have also been prepared. A new synthesis for CmF. has been developed, and some thermodynamic properties of CmCl. have been studied.

Hanford Engineer Works, Washington, followed by chemical separations in Chicago, led to the identification, completed in January 1945, of .95 and .96 (again), produced by the reactions .Pu (n,.) .Pu (n,.) . The names americium (95) and curium (96) were suggested at an ACS annual Spring Meeting in April, 1946.

Introductionne by means of rock disaggregation and mineral separation, using liquids with densities of 2.89 (bromoform) or 2.96 (tetrabromoethane). High-density mineral grains sink in these liquids, hence the name ‘heavy’ minerals.
