HRV and Alterations in the Vegetative Nervous Systembable disturbances in the autonomous system. In a significant number of publications, it is even regarded as proof for ANS dysfunction without other kind of evidence (e.g., in Mazzeo et al. 2011). In this chapter I intend to review this hypothesis.

Thus, a meta-analysis proposed that “HRV is important not so much for what it tells us about the state of the heart as much as it is important for what it tells us about the state of the brain” (Thayer et al. 2012).
