Evolutionary mechanisms of senescencee discussed. In particular, the negative genetic correlations between traits predicted by the antagonistic pleiotropy model may be obscured by positive correlations that are inevitable in a multivariate system, or by the effects of variation due to deleterious mutations. The status of the genetic evidence relevant to these theories is discussed.
