R. Palm,H. Hellendoorn,M. Reinfrank and heterotrophic processes with a continuous, closely coupled recycling of matter. This is particularly evident in periods of nutrient limitation. Within the mixing gradient, changes were restricted to structural components (species composition) whereas the functional equilibrium was maintained.

Impact of increased river discharge on the phytoplankton community in the outer Oslofjord, Norway, river outlet. Nutrients from the river water were efficiently utilized in the open part of the fjord. The flood trigged a phytoplankton bloom dominated by harmless species commonly observed in the fjord plankton.

The analysis revealed also significant differences in species specific depth distribution patterns over both time scales. It is discussed that the co-existence of the two dominant dinoflagellate species during the vernal bloom is due to niche separation through behavioural adaptations.
