Transepithelial Ion Transport in Cultured Colonic Epithelial Cell Monolayersh cultured epithelia to consider both the advantages and disadvantages of such a step and particularly if the questions to be posed are most appropriately answered by such an approach. As far as the transport of ions is concerned, it is thought that the majority of the transepithelial flux passes through (transcellular) rather than between (paracellular) the tubule cells. It is obvious, however, for those ions which undergo transcellular transport, that they must traverse both the apical and basolateral membranes.
