From the Chicago Pile 1 to next-generation reactors,more than half a century ago with the Enrico Fermi and his collaborators’ pioneering work, culminated with the construction of the Chicago Pile 1 reactor. Starting from those first experiments, the developments that followed, and those foreseeable in the next future, are shortly discussed.

Particle physicists can hardly spend a day without referring to fermions, to distances measured in fermis or to something else bearing the name of Fermi. His legacy is overwhelming.

,Fermi’s last lessons,l School of Physics held in Varenna. These lessons were taught by Enrico Fermi [1] for the II course on “Questioni sulla rivelazione delle particelle elementari” (Questions about the detection of elementary particles), directed by G. Puppi in 1954 just a few months before Fermi’s death.
