Education and Society in Modem Turkey, all too clear, for the violence which erupted throughout the society bringing it close to the point of civil war was particularly acute in the education system. The social inequalities and ideological polarities of the society have always been precisely outlined in its system of education.

Higher Education in Turkey,eties than had been hoped. The failure of higher education institutions in the two societies to meet the goals that have been set for them cannot only be attributed to weaknesses in the universities themselves, although these do matter; the failure is an aspect of the structures of underdevelopment of the societies in which they have grown.

Introduction, structures alonglines modelled on those of Europe. Change in education has been atthe forefront of those efforts. The relative failure of both societies torealise these goals fully provides us with an interesting context inwhich to examine once more the subtle and ever-changing relationshipbetween education and socioeconomic development.
