‘Proteus Wordsworth’’s odes were lacking, the implication being that the older poet could not follow through his own formulations, and that his odes express some kind of inadequate compromise and show a poetic weakness. We can look forward, then, to Shelley in his own poetry attempting to reformulate those inadequacies and complete that lack.
