Von der Schule in die Arbeitswelte field of bioinorganic chemistry has also been an important factor in spurring the growth of interest in complexes of macrocyclic compounds since it has been recognized that many complexes containing synthetic macrocyclic ligands may serve as models for biologically important species which contain metal ions in macrocyclic ligand environments.

Ligand Field Spectra and Magnetic Properties of Synthetic Macrocyclic Complexes,ely related phthalocyanines, are excluded, as they are treated elsewhere in this volume. Several earlier reviews (.) have included information about the electronic structures of the synthetic macrocyclic complexes.

Chemical Reactivity in Constrained Systems,the ligand plays a very active role in the reactions observed. Thus the macrocyclic ligand not only modulates the metal-ion reactivity by means of steric constraints, but the ligand may also provide complementary sites for reaction.
