The Theory of Inter-Firm Cooperation in R&Dentures (RJVs). By and large, theorists have focused their attention on horizontal RJVs. This may be the result of their interest in the potential anti-competitive effects of RJVs which may be more pertinent in horizontal cooperation. Or it may be the result of the quest for analytical simplicity.

The Effect of Research Joint Ventures on R&Dust authorities (Federal Trade Commission, 1996). In addition to its potential for positive welfare effects, collaboration in R&D may be used by firms to diminish competition, delay quality advances, and reduce incentives to innovate. It may also be used to set standards and gain competitive advantages over superior products of other firms.
