Radicalism and the New Sociology of Education,In the book ., edited by Michael F. D. Young, and in subsequent publications there emerges a ‘new’ sociology of education which purports to challenge the traditional sociology of education. The new sociology refers to itself, or is variously described as, the New Directions, the radical, and the phenomenological sociology of education.

In chapter 5 the work of Samuel Bowles and Herbert Gintis, who claim to be ‘influenced by Marxism’, will be examined. In particular the notion of the role of education in the reproduction of forces of production will be examined and criticized.
