Mathematics: Theory & Applicationsty is closely related to the concept of parallelism. The scope of a process within a system depends on the level of abstraction from which the system is considered, and the more the processes are independent of one another the more decomposition of a system into parallel processes is useful.

Constant and Separable Extensions,makes abstraction of any physical fragmentation of the system into several components. For the major part of the chapter, the notion of parallel processes is irrelevant, only quasi-parallel state transitions are considered.
