描述.Colloids are submicron particles that are ubiquitous in nature (milk, clay, blood) and industrial products (paints, drilling fluids, food). In recent decades it has become clear that adding depletants such as polymers or small colloids to colloidal dispersions allows one to tune the interactions between the colloids and in this way control the stability, structure and rheological properties of colloidal dispersions. This book offers a concise introduction to the fundamentals of depletion effects and their influence on the phase behavior of colloidal dispersions. Introduction,olymers that do not adsorb onto the colloids opens up a wide variety of possibilities to tune the phase behaviour of colloidal dispersions. The interactions mediated by such non-adsorbing species and the resulting phase behaviour are at the core of this book.

We then extended this treatment in . to ideal and excluded volume polymers and in . we considered small colloidal spheres (including micelles) and colloidal rods as depletants. In this chapter we consider the phase behaviour of mixtures of colloidal rods plus polymeric depletants.
