It has been suggested that the low PO. may be brought about by large diffusion distances within the carotid body (1,2).

Effects of Temperature and Stimulating Agents on Carotid Body CellsThe mechanisms of impulse generation in carotid body chemoreceptors are complex. One problem is that there is little information about the behavior of carotid body (type I or II) cells.
