NaBH,-Mediated Complete Reduction of the ,,,-Unsaturated Ketone Units of Chalcones in the Synthesisyclisation of the resulting saturated alcohols to flavans is described. The chalcones were readily prepared from commercially available acetophenone and salicylaldehyde derivatives. Through this sequence of reactions, 3′,4′-dimethoxyflavan and 3′,4′,8-trimethoxyflavan were prepared in good overall yields.

The highest %R. and T. of 0.9–1.1 % and 449–455 °C was found in Lafia-Obi samples, next was Lamza with 0.5–0.7 % and 434–438 °C and Kumo with 0.4–0.6 %
