Classification and NomenclaturePumping can be defined as the addition of energy to a fluid to move it from one point to another. It is not, as frequently thought, the addition of pressure. Because energy is capacity to do work, adding it to a fluid causes the fluid to do work, normally flowing through a pipe or rising to a higher level.
