Springer Series in Optical Sciencesow exchange process has been demonstrated to hold for all of the flows studied. In addition, new types of flow viz. the anomalous modes, have been investigated and demonstrated to exhibit regular behaviour. Finally, end effects have beer shown to be of the utmost importance in the cell number selection process.

The stability of the stationary cells against transversal phase disturbances is a crucial property of the Taylor-Couette instability. It is directly related to the absence of rotationnal invariance.
