Evolution of the “EF-Hand” Family of Calcium-Binding ProteinsThe family of the intracellular calciproteins that bind calcium with an affinity constant Ka ? 10. to 10. M. includes the two vitamin D-induced calcium-binding proteins (CaBP) now termed calbindins D. In this family of proteins each calcium-binding domain is organized as a consensus structure, “EF-hand” domain (1).

This protein has a size (M.?8,500) and tertiary structure similar to that of the globular domains of calmodulin and troponin C and binds two Ca. -ions strongly (K ?10. - 10. M., depending on the ionic strength). The schematic structure of the molecule is shown in figure 1.
