An important goal of aging research is to develop approaches that may not only extend life expectancy but also prolong health-span. These efforts may also be aimed at maintaining metabolic health throughout life by targeting brown adipocyte function.

Although BAT has been studied in human infants for more than a century, the literature covering different aspects of the tissue is rather limited. The aim of this review is to summarize the literature and describe what is actually known about the tissue and its importance for early human life.
