Rotterdam Becoming a Blue-Green City, formed by the rivers Rhine and Meuse. The city grew around a dam that was constructed in the river Rotte in the thirteenth century. After construction of the New Waterways in 1872, which created a direct connection to the North Sea, the city developed into one of the world’s largest ports and the second city of the Netherlands.
