In 1962 (Anon 1962) TAPPI published Monograph No. 24 with 883 references, related to the effect of environmental and genetic factors that would affect pulpwood quality. Only a few of these references are repeated in this chapter.

The opportunities for genetic control of wood are particularly attractive, since wood properties are generally strongly inherited. Many of the aspects of the genetics of wood are covered in Chapter 11 of Zobel and Talbert (1984) entitled “Wood and Tree Improvement.”
