Electromagnetic waves in a cold gyrotropic plasmaave in a magnetized plasma. With the information obtained in the last Chapter we are now in -a position to find out whether this notion is, at least, applicable under certain restrictive conditions. If so, these need to be specified.

Propagation in the space between Earth and ionosphere (deka- and hektometer-waves)ortance, on the other hand, is mainly still due to the fact that it allows waves with frequencies in the HF-band and below to propagate from ground to ground over very large distances, and that it influences quite considerably the ground-to-space and space-to-ground propagation of radio waves of higher frequencies.

Propagation through the ionosphere the ultraviolet ranges. In fact, absorption sets the decisive limits to groundbased optical astronomy. The situation is quite different with radio waves. While strong absorption occurs only in certain frequency ranges and at certain hours (e.g. for LF and MF waves during daylight hours), the most important ionospheric effect is due to refraction.
