Cuppedo- and cappedophanes,at rigid and the 5′-position of the .-terphenyl moiety carries a bulky substituent. This methodology opens the way for the synthesis of cuppedo- and cappedophanes containing functionality within a well-defined cavity. Synthetic routes to these phanes are discussed in some detail, as are their NMR spectra, conformations, and selective reactions.
